Bakersfield’s identity is rooted in local traditions as well as its role as a gateway between California’s major regions. Among the best-known food traditions is Basque dining, where restaurants connect generations of Kern County families and visitors through communal meals and distinctive menus.
A Basque dining landmark in Old Town Kern
Wool Growers Restaurant is one established destination in the Old Town Kern neighborhood. Its official website describes a Basque kitchen and menu with dishes such as garlic fried chicken and oxtail stew. Confirm the restaurant’s actual hours and reservation policy before traveling; meals and menus may change.
Where to stay downtown
The Padre Hotel at 1702 18th Street is a historic boutique hotel within the downtown core. Its website publishes current room options, dining venues and guest policies. For another overnight option, Bakersfield Marriott at the Convention Center provides accommodation close to the city’s event facilities.
Connect food, culture and local events
The Bakersfield Fox Theater hosts comedy, music and film programming in a historic setting. Its independently maintained calendar helps visitors plan a downtown night with current showtimes rather than relying on dated event roundups.
Planning a dental appointment from out of town?
People traveling for treatment should consider transportation, appointment schedules, companion needs, accessibility and recovery recommendations. A hotel or restaurant suggestion is not a medical recommendation, and you should ask your treating practice about any travel limitations.
